Two senior judges from Iran's Supreme Court have been killed in an attack at the court's headquarters, according to official judiciary sources.
The victims were identified as Ali Razini and Mohammad Moghiseh, with a third judge also injured in the attack, which took place at Tehran's Palace of Justice. Iranian officials reported that Supreme Court judges Ali Razini and Mohammad Moghiseh were shot and killed in the assault, while another judge was wounded.
Iran's judiciary’s press service said that an armed man "infiltrated the Supreme Court in a planned act to assassinate two judges."
However, the attacker's purpose behind the attack is not unclear.
Initial investigations revealed that the attacker had no legal case pending before the court and had no known connections to the judiciary, as reported by the judiciary's press service.
The Supreme Court, the highest judicial body in Iran, is based in Tehran and has branches throughout the country. The supreme leader appoints its head.
The full details of the incident remain unclear. According to the judiciary's press service, the attacker "quickly committed suicide" after carrying out the shooting, although this claim has not been independently confirmed.
Other Iranian media outlets reported that the attacker was allegedly a member of an "infiltrating security force," who first injured a bodyguard with a knife, took their weapon, and then proceeded to carry out the assassinations.
Iran's semi-official Mehr News Agency, citing an informed source, reported that the judges were shot with live ammunition before the attacker took his own life.
Both judges held influential positions within Iran's judicial system. Judge Mohammad Moghiseh had overseen several high-profile political trials, including those involving supporters of the 2009 opposition Green Movement. He had been sanctioned by both the European Union and the United States for human rights violations.
Judge Ali Razini had served in various prominent roles and was accused by Iran's opposition of being involved in a series of extrajudicial killings of political prisoners in 1988.
