A two-day Coastal Security Exercise, Sagar Kavach 02/24, kicked off on Wednesday along the coastline of Goa and Maharashtra. The exercise is being conducted by the Indian Coast Guard in coordination with several key agencies, including the Indian Navy, Customs, Coastal Police, CISF, the Maritime Ports Authority (MPA), the Fisheries Department, and the Captain of Ports from the state of Goa.
The multi-agency exercise, which spans the entire coastline, seeks to strengthen and enhance maritime and coastal security across the region. The drill focuses on simulating various real-life scenarios to assess and improve the nation’s collective response to a range of security threats, including infiltration, smuggling, piracy, and natural disasters. Agencies involved include the Coast Guard, Navy, Marine Police, Customs, Fisheries Department, and Port Authorities.
As part of the exercise, a variety of drills will be conducted, with specific focus on simulated terrorist threats. These drills will help revalidate Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and promote synergy between all participating agencies. The ultimate goal is to ensure effective patrolling of the coastline, identify security gaps, and intercept any infiltrators to prevent attacks on vital installations (VAs) or vulnerable points (VPs) as well as on various state vessels.
The exercise highlights the unwavering commitment of these agencies to safeguarding the nation's coastline and protecting maritime interests. It also emphasises the importance of seamless communication and coordination among various stakeholders in maritime security.
This joint operation also aims to enhance awareness and promote information-sharing between the agencies involved, helping to establish a unified coastal security communication plan. Such collaborative exercises are vital in ensuring preparedness and response to potential maritime threats and securing India's coastline from both natural and man-made challenges.
