A fresh political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu after Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) MLA VMS Mustafa made remarks about Sanatana Dharma that triggered strong reactions from the BJP and other political leaders. The issue intensified further on Thursday when Mustafa shared a video on X carrying the message, “We are not against any religion,” amid growing criticism over his earlier statement.
The video posted by Mustafa appeared to be an attempt to counter allegations that he or his party were opposed to Hindu beliefs. In the clip, women were seen chanting mantras and invoking Hindu deities in Tamil. His name was repeatedly mentioned during the chants, giving the impression that the video was aimed at defending his image after the backlash.
The controversy began after Mustafa spoke to reporters about TVK’s ideological stand. During the interaction, he said, “We too subscribe to the ideals of Periyar and Ambedkar. We too have entered the fray to abolish Sanatana.” His statement quickly drew criticism, especially from BJP leaders, who accused the party of attacking Hindu traditions while publicly claiming to support all communities.
The BJP strongly reacted to the remark and questioned TVK’s political intentions. BJP Telangana vice-president Shanthi Kumar targeted both TVK and its chief Vijay over the issue. In a post on X, he said, “TVK MLA Mustafa says they entered politics to destroy Sanatan, Udhayanidhi repeats the same old 'eradicate Sanatan' line, and silence from Vijay speaks volumes.” He further added, “Hindu votes were taken with folded hands, but now the real agenda is out in the open.”
The remarks have increased political pressure on actor-turned-politician Vijay, who recently entered Tamil Nadu politics through TVK. Opposition parties and critics are now questioning the party’s ideological position and whether it aligns with anti-Sanatana views often associated with the Dravidian political movement in the state.
The controversy gained further attention because it unfolded alongside another statement made by Tamil Nadu minister Udhayanidhi Stalin. Addressing the state assembly two days ago, Udhayanidhi once again criticised Sanatana Dharma while referring to a dispute related to an order at the Chief Minister’s swearing-in ceremony.
During his speech, Udhayanidhi said, “Sanatana Dharma, which divides people, must certainly be abolished.” His statement revived an already heated political debate that has remained active in Tamil Nadu for months. Udhayanidhi had earlier also faced criticism over similar remarks on Sanatana Dharma, and his latest comments once again drew sharp reactions from the BJP.
BJP spokesperson CR Kesavan condemned Udhayanidhi’s speech and described it as a “toxic rant.” He also accused opposition leaders of promoting “divisive hate politics.” BJP leaders argued that repeated attacks on Sanatana Dharma were hurting religious sentiments and creating unnecessary social divisions.
The issue has now become a major talking point in Tamil Nadu politics, especially because of the involvement of both ruling alliance leaders and members of Vijay’s party. The BJP has tried to project the matter as an example of what it claims is the anti-Hindu mindset of certain regional parties in the state.
At the same time, Mustafa’s clarification video has added another layer to the debate. Supporters of TVK argue that the party is not against any religion and that Mustafa’s comments were linked to social justice ideologies inspired by leaders like Periyar and Ambedkar. However, critics believe the clarification does not fully address the original statement.
So far, Vijay has not publicly responded to the controversy. His silence has become another point of attack for political opponents, who are demanding clarity from the TVK leadership on the party’s stand regarding Sanatana Dharma and religion.
The debate around Sanatana Dharma has remained politically sensitive in Tamil Nadu due to its connection with Dravidian ideology, caste discussions, and regional political narratives. The latest remarks from Mustafa and Udhayanidhi have once again brought the issue to the centre of political discourse in the state.
