In a major counter-terrorism success, Pakistani security forces on Thursday foiled a suicide bombing attempt near Jandola Fort in the Tank district of southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The attack, carried out by Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants, began when a suicide bomber detonated explosives at a security checkpoint, triggering a fierce gun battle between security personnel and attackers.
Suicide Bomber Detonates Explosives at Checkpoint
According to reports, the suicide bomber set off explosives at the southern gate of Jandola Fort, injuring two security personnel in the blast. Shortly after the explosion, heavily armed militants launched an assault, opening fire on the security forces. The attack led to intense fighting within the vicinity of the military compound, as troops swiftly responded with heavy gunfire to repel the attackers.
Security Forces Kill 10 Militants in Intense Gunfight
Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi confirmed that security forces killed 10 terrorists during the exchange of gunfire. Speaking to Dawn, Naqvi said, "I salute the security forces for foiling the attack," praising the troops for their swift action and describing the elimination of the militants as an "exemplary end." He added, "The nation is proud of the professional capabilities of the security forces and stands by them."
The identification process for the dead militants is ongoing, and authorities have yet to release their names. However, sources cited by Express Tribune confirmed that the attack was a suicide bombing carried out by the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a militant organisation formed in 2007 that has been engaged in a prolonged insurgency against the Pakistani military.
TTP’s Role and Objectives in Ongoing Conflict
The TTP, responsible for Thursday’s attack, is known for its violent campaign against Pakistan’s security forces, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the formerly Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). The group aims to drive out Islamabad’s control from these regions and impose its own rule. With a history of high-profile attacks, the TTP remains one of Pakistan’s most dangerous militant groups, frequently targeting military and civilian installations.
Attack Follows Recent Train Hijacking in Balochistan
This latest assault comes only a day after Pakistani security forces successfully ended a separate crisis in Balochistan’s Bolan district, where militants hijacked the Jaffar Express train. In that incident, all 33 armed militants were killed in a large-scale rescue operation. The attackers, linked to the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), had stormed the train after bombing railway tracks and taking hostages in a mountainous region.
Pakistani officials confirmed that security forces freed over 340 passengers during a two-day operation that concluded late Wednesday. The Jaffar Express, carrying around 450 passengers, had been attacked by BLA militants, who accuse the government and external actors of exploiting Balochistan’s natural resources.
Thursday's successful operation near Jandola Fort demonstrates the Pakistani military’s continued efforts to counter militant threats and safeguard key areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. While security forces prevented significant damage by neutralising 10 attackers, the incident underscores the persistent danger posed by militant groups like the TTP. Coming on the heels of the dramatic train rescue in Balochistan, these back-to-back events highlight the ongoing challenges facing Pakistan as it battles insurgency and terrorism on multiple fronts.
