US President Donald Trump has backed down from his threat to impose tariffs on European allies over the issue of Greenland, saying that he has reached what he called the “framework of a future deal” following a meeting with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte.
In a Truth Social post from Davos, Switzerland, Trump wrote, “Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic region. This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America and all NATO nations.”
He added, “Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1. Additional discussions are being held concerning the Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland. Further information will be made available as discussions progress. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and various others, as needed, will be responsible for the negotiations — they will report directly to me. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Trump did not explain the details of the so-called framework. He did not say what exactly the deal covers or what it would mean for the future status of Greenland. He only said the tariffs were now off the table based on the understanding he reached with Rutte.
Earlier in the day, Trump gave a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos. In that speech, he backed away from his earlier talk about using force to take control of Greenland. But he still said he wanted “immediate negotiations” to acquire the island from Denmark.
In his Davos speech, he said, “We probably won’t get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force, where we would be, frankly, unstoppable — but I won’t do that.”
This was the first time Trump publicly ruled out military force in the Greenland matter. However, before that, he had warned of using strength if necessary.
Trump’s threatened tariffs had been aimed at several European countries that oppose his push to acquire Greenland. Those tariffs were scheduled to begin on February 1, but Trump said his new understanding with NATO made them unnecessary.
Trump also mentioned in his Truth Social post that more talks were continuing about the “Golden Dome” as it relates to Greenland. He said further information would be shared later as the discussions progress.
In his post, Trump said several senior US officials would be responsible for the negotiations on Greenland and would report to him directly. These officials include Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
The Times of India article also noted that Trump did not give any specific details about the framework he mentioned, but he made it clear that the tariffs were now cancelled because of it.
Trump’s comments about dropping the tariffs came after his previously tough stance, which had caused concern among allies. In recent days, tensions have risen between the US and some European allies over Greenland and Trump’s proposals.
By publicly stating that he would not impose the tariffs as planned, Trump signalled a shift from his earlier threats. The president’s decision to highlight the “framework of a future deal” reflected a more diplomatic tone in negotiations with NATO allies over the Arctic region.
