During a rare Friday Justice Department speech, US President Donald Trump pledged to "expose" everyone involved in prosecuting him in multiple criminal cases, according to the Associated Press. Speaking at the Justice Department’s headquarters, an agency that had charged him just months earlier, Trump also demanded that his perceived political opponents be jailed.
“We will expel the rogue actors and corrupt forces from our government. We will expose, very much expose, their egregious crimes and severe misconduct," Donald Trump expressed at the time of his speech. Trump described the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021 as "the most humiliating time in this history of our country." He then demanded that the officials responsible for the decision, from the Joe Biden administration, be imprisoned.
"The people who did this to us should go to jail. They should go to jail," U.S. President Trump stated.
For the first time in ten years, a President visited the Justice Department. During his speech, Trump accused the Biden administration of using the department as a tool against him. “Our predecessors turned this Department of Justice into the Department of Injustice. But I stand before you today to declare that those days are over, and they are never going to come back and never coming back," Trump expressed. He further said, “So now, as the chief law enforcement officer in our country, I will insist upon and demand full and complete accountability for the wrongs and abuses that have occurred.”
The President openly criticised the prosecutors and officials involved in legal cases against him, referring to them as “scum.” He argued that the Justice Department needed to confront the "abuse" within it before any reforms could occur. As part of efforts to overhaul the department, the Trump administration has already dismissed prosecutors who had pursued cases against him.
The Justice Department dismissed employees who were part of special counsel Jack Smith's team, which handled cases related to election interference and the mishandling of classified documents involving Trump. After Trump was elected President, these cases were dropped, as the Justice Department cannot indict a sitting President. According to an AP report, senior department officials have also requested lists of employees involved in the January 6 Capitol riot investigation and have removed prosecutors who worked on the case.
"It’s going to be legendary. And also going to be legendary for the people that are able to seek it out and bring justice. We will restore the scales of justice in America and we will ensure that such abuses never happen again in our country,” Trump spoke during his speech.
