US President Donald Trump, during his call with coalition leaders on Thursday, said Europe must stop buying Russian oil which he claimed is helping Moscow finance its war against Ukraine.
"The president also emphasised that European leaders must place economic pressure on China for funding Russia's war efforts," a White House official told news agency Reuters.
Trump’s latest statement came only days after Washington imposed an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports, penalising New Delhi for purchasing Russian crude.
French President Emmanuel Macron hosted the Paris summit, attended by Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky, while other leaders, including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, joined remotely.
The level of US involvement still appears uncertain, even after European leaders spoke to Trump through a video call following the Paris summit, where the "coalition of the willing" pledged its support.
The meeting was seen as part of Macron’s effort to show that Europe can act on its own, following Trump’s decision to start direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
After his call with European leaders, Trump said he would soon speak with Putin, while Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed on Friday that such a conversation could be arranged quickly.
Macron said the coalition and the United States had agreed to coordinate more closely on future sanctions, particularly targeting Russia’s oil and gas sector, as well as China.
"President Macron and European leaders called President Trump into their ‘Coalition of the Willing’ meeting. President Trump emphasised that Europe must stop purchasing Russian oil that is funding the war - as Russia received 1.1 billion euros in fuel sales from the EU in one year," the White House official said.
The European Commission has proposed a law to phase out EU imports of Russian oil and gas by January 1, 2028, as Brussels aims to cut its long standing energy dependence on Russia following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Most European countries halted Russian crude imports in 2022 and Russian fuel in 2023. It is unclear whether Trump was pointing to crude shipments continuing in Hungary and Slovakia, or to fuel produced from Russian oil refined in third countries such as India.
Trump also said during the call that "European leaders must place economic pressure on China for funding Russia’s war efforts," the official added.
Trump has been increasingly frustrated over his inability to stop the war in Ukraine after he had initially predicted that he could bring it to an end quickly when he took office last January.
He has held back from imposing new sanctions on Russia and China, which is a major buyer of Russian oil, but has raised tariffs on US imports from India. Trump dismissed this week’s talks between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, but also suggested that the two leaders might be plotting against the United States.
