President Donald Trump’s executive order bans transgender Women from participating in female sports. Transgender Women cannot participate in female categories sports. The executive order outlines regulations, guidance, and legal interpretations, and it directs the Department of Education to investigate high schools suspected of not complying with its provisions.
Republicans argue that the order restores fairness in sports, while LGBT advocacy groups and human rights organisations have criticised it as discriminatory. The order takes effect immediately and primarily applies to high school, university and grassroots sports. Several sports governing bodies, such as those in swimming, athletics and golf, have already prohibited transgender women from competing in female categories at elite levels if they have undergone male puberty.
According to White House officials who briefed reporters on Wednesday, the new order gives the Department of Education the authority to monitor how schools implement Title IX. This U.S. law prohibits sex-based discrimination in federally funded educational programs.
An administration official explained that the order would undo the Biden administration's position from April 2024, which stated that LGBT students would be protected by federal law but did not provide specific guidance regarding transgender athletes.
"If you let men take over women's sports teams or invade your locker rooms, you will be investigated for violations of Title IX and risk your federal funding," clarified Trump.
In addition, the White House is scheduling to get sports organisations like the National Collegiate Athletics Association, or NCAA. They would come to the White House, and the White House would arrange a meet-up of female athletes and their parents with them to discuss concerns.
The official who spoke about the order stated that the U.S. would take all necessary measures to prevent transgender athletes from competing against women in International Olympic Committee events held on American soil.
President Trump clarified that this order would apply to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
He also mentioned that transgender Olympic athletes attempting to travel to the U.S. to compete in the LA Games would be denied visas.
Before signing the executive order, Trump announced that "the war on women's sports is over", stating that in the time of the LA Games, "my administration will not stand by and watch men beat and batter female athletes."
He stated that he would instruct the Homeland Security Secretary "to deny any and all visa applications made by men attempting to fraudulently enter the United States while identifying themselves as women athletes..."
White House officials stated that the policies are generally well-received by Americans and are essential for ensuring "fairness" for women in sports and safety.
Kelley Robinson, Human Rights Campaign president, stated that the order "exposes young people to harassment and discrimination, emboldening people to question the gender of kids who don't fit a narrow view of how they're supposed to dress or look".
"For so many students, sports are about finding somewhere to belong," Ms Robinson said further. "Not partisan policies that make life harder for them."
According to UCLA Williams Institute’s study, less than 1% of the total population over the age of 13 in the United States is transgender, and the number of individuals who play sports is even less.
On January 20, the first day of Trump's presidency, he signed an executive order directing the federal government to recognise sex as either male or female officially.
