US President Donald Trump on Tuesday posted a new map of the United States that showed Canada, Venezuela and Greenland as part of US territory. The image, which appeared to be AI-generated, was shared on Trump’s Truth Social platform and immediately drew attention across the world.
The post came at a time when Trump had been engaged in a war of words with European allies over his renewed push to take over Greenland. The map showed an expanded United States, with neighbouring Canada, the Arctic island of Greenland and the South American nation Venezuela included within its borders.
A few minutes after posting the map, Trump shared another image. In this photo, Trump was seen placing the US flag in Greenland alongside Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The image carried a message that read, “Greenland US Territory Est 2026.” This post further intensified reactions to Trump’s statements and actions regarding Greenland.
After coming to power last year, Trump had earlier made an offer to make Canada the 51st state of the United States. The Canadian government strongly dismissed the proposal. This rejection later led to a bitter trade war between the two neighbouring countries, further straining relations.
Trump’s post also came amid developments involving Venezuela. Earlier this month, US special forces conducted an operation in Venezuela and captured President Nicolas Maduro and his wife from Caracas. They were reportedly taken to New York to face trial on drug charges. Following this operation, Trump said that the United States would “run” Venezuela and that US companies would control its oil, which is known to be the largest proven oil reserve in the world.
Trump also issued a warning to Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, asking her to follow Washington’s direction or face consequences. While Trump had earlier made strong statements about Venezuela, this is the first time he has made an explicit claim over the country by including it as US territory on a map.
Greenland has been a key focus of Trump’s recent statements. He has repeatedly said that the United States needs Greenland for “national security.” This is despite the fact that the US already has a military base on the island and existing security agreements through NATO with Denmark, which controls Greenland.
On Monday, Trump made another strong statement, saying he no longer feels obliged to think “purely of peace.” This comment came after he said he was snubbed for a Nobel Peace Prize. His remarks marked a sharp change in tone as he stepped up his campaign to take control of Greenland.
In an unusual exchange with Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, Trump openly questioned Denmark’s right over Greenland. He said he wanted “complete and total control” of the vast Arctic island. In a message shared publicly, Trump wrote to the Norwegian leader, “Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace.”
Trump has also threatened to impose heavy new tariffs on European allies who oppose his plan to buy Greenland. These threats have raised serious concerns in allied capitals. The remarks also had an immediate economic impact, with stock markets reportedly plunging when they opened on Monday.
The series of posts and statements has added to global uncertainty and diplomatic tension. Trump’s use of images, maps and strong language has drawn sharp reactions, especially as he continues to press claims over territories that belong to other nations.
