U.S. President Donald Trump has said that the United States plans to finish the ongoing conflict with Iran before shifting its attention to Cuba. Speaking during an event at the White House, Trump indicated that while the immediate priority is the war involving Iran, Washington may soon begin focusing on relations with Cuba.
The president made these remarks during a ceremony celebrating the champions of Major League Soccer, Inter Miami CF. At the event, Trump spoke about the current military situation and future foreign policy priorities.
Referring to the conflict with Iran, Trump said the United States is concentrating on ending the war first. “We want to finish this one first,” Trump said, referring to the war with Iran. He then suggested that attention could later turn to Cuba, adding, “But that will be just a question of time before you and a lot of unbelievable people are going to be going back to Cuba.”
Trump also claimed that the Cuban government is eager to negotiate with the United States. According to him, Havana is strongly interested in reaching an agreement with Washington. “Cuba wants to make a deal so badly,” Trump said. He also spoke about Cuban Americans and their ties to the island nation, saying that many of them could eventually return. “We want you back, and we don’t want to lose you.”
The comments come at a time when tensions between the United States and Cuba have been rising. Relations between the two countries have historically been strained, especially during periods of political disagreement. Cuba operates under a communist political system, and diplomatic ties with Washington have often experienced ups and downs. During Trump’s second term as president, tensions between the two countries have increased again.
While discussing the broader international situation, Trump also spoke about the ongoing military conflict involving Iran. He offered an optimistic assessment of the progress being made by U.S. and Israeli forces in the war.
According to the president, the military operations have been moving faster than expected. “The United States military, together with the wonderful Israeli partners, continues to totally demolish the enemy, far ahead of schedule,” Trump said during his remarks.
Trump also claimed that Iran’s military strength has been significantly weakened during the conflict. He said that key parts of Iran’s armed forces had been destroyed. “They have no air force, they have no air defence,” Trump said while describing the current situation.
The president further claimed that Iran’s naval forces had also suffered major losses during the fighting. According to him, several ships had been destroyed in a short period of time. “Their navy has been destroyed,” Trump said, adding that the United States had wiped out “24 ships in three days.”
However, Trump did not provide detailed information about these military operations during his speech. The claims he made about the extent of damage to Iran’s military capabilities could not immediately be independently verified.
In addition to discussing military progress, Trump said that Iranian leaders may now be seeking negotiations to end the conflict. According to the president, officials from Iran have been reaching out about the possibility of a deal.
“They’re calling, they’re saying, ‘How do we make a deal?’” Trump said. He suggested that the United States is currently less interested in negotiations than Iran. “I said, ‘You’re being a little bit late, and we want to fight now more than they do.’”
At the same time, Trump said that Iranian diplomats could still play a role in shaping the future of their country if they decide to cooperate with the United States. He said that working together could help bring change within Iran.
Trump stated that those who choose to cooperate could “help us shape a new and better Iran with great potential.” However, he also warned that continuing the conflict could lead to serious consequences for the country.
The president also addressed concerns about global oil markets during his speech. Wars and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East often affect energy prices and supply around the world. Trump said that despite the conflict, oil markets appear to have stabilised.
“The oil seems to have pretty much stabilised,” Trump said. He added that the war had forced the United States to shift its focus temporarily. “We had it very low, but I had to take this little detour.”
Trump also indicated that the U.S. government may soon announce additional measures to ease pressure on energy markets. However, he did not provide details about what those measures might involve.
For the moment, the administration says its main focus remains on the war with Iran. At the same time, Trump’s comments suggest that once the conflict ends, the United States could quickly turn its attention to Cuba and its relationship with the island nation.
