Donald Trump on Sunday said he had reviewed Iran’s response to a United States peace proposal aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in West Asia and made it clear that he was unhappy with Tehran’s reply. The US President described the response as “totally unacceptable” but did not explain the exact reasons behind his rejection.
The proposal was part of diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and end the conflict in the region. According to local media reports, Iran’s response called for an end to fighting across all fronts, including in Lebanon, where Israel has been engaged in conflict with the Iran-backed Hezbollah group. The response also highlighted the importance of ensuring the safety and security of shipping routes in the region.
Trump reacted strongly to Iran’s response in a post on Truth Social. He wrote, “I have just read the response from Iran’s so-called “Representatives.” I don’t like it — TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!”
Despite the strong reaction, Trump did not provide details about what exactly in Iran’s response led him to reject the proposal. No further clarification was given by the White House regarding the content of the discussions or possible next steps.
Earlier the same day, Trump also accused Iran of deliberately delaying negotiations and misleading the international community for decades. In another statement, he criticised Tehran sharply and claimed the country had taken advantage of the United States and other nations for many years.
“Iran has been playing games with the United States, and the rest of the World, for 47 years (DELAY, DELAY, DELAY!),” he wrote.
Trump further said that Iran had mocked the United States for years and claimed that such behaviour would soon come to an end. Referring to America, he stated that Tehran had been “laughing at our now GREAT AGAIN Country” before adding: “They will be laughing no longer!”
The US President also targeted former President Barack Obama during his remarks. Trump accused Obama of being favourable towards Tehran and claimed his administration had helped strengthen Iran politically and economically. He said Obama had given Iran “a major and very powerful new lease on life”.
Meanwhile, more details about Iran’s proposal have emerged through reports from Iranian media outlets. Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency, citing an informed source, reported that the proposal was sent to the United States through mediator Pakistan.
According to the report, Iran demanded an end to the conflict across all regional fronts and called for the removal of sanctions imposed on Tehran. The proposal also reportedly requested the lifting of sanctions placed by the US Office of Foreign Assets Control, commonly known as OFAC, particularly those affecting Iranian oil sales during a 30-day period.
In addition, the proposal called for an end to the naval blockade imposed on Iran. Tehran reportedly argued that such restrictions were increasing tensions and affecting regional stability.
Further details were reported by The Wall Street Journal, which cited unnamed sources familiar with the matter. According to the report, Iran had suggested diluting a portion of its highly enriched uranium stockpile. The remaining material, the report said, would be transferred to a third country as part of a possible agreement.
The developments come at a time of growing tension in West Asia, with diplomatic efforts continuing alongside military and political confrontations in the region. Trump’s strong rejection of Iran’s response signals that major differences still remain between the two sides, making any immediate breakthrough in negotiations unlikely.
