US President Donald Trump has met Russian presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev at the White House ahead of next week’s trilateral talks between Russia, Ukraine and the United States in Abu Dhabi. Trump predicted a “big agreement” but did not share further details.
According to Bloomberg, Trump spoke to reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday. He said the proposed agreement would “involve more than Ukraine” and “might involve all of Europe”. He also confirmed that he did not meet any Ukrainian representatives during his meeting with Dmitriev.
Trump had promised to end Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on his first day in office. However, the war has entered its fifth year despite repeated efforts by Trump and his team to broker a peace deal.
Earlier on Thursday, First Lady Melania Trump hosted Russian and Ukrainian representatives at the White House for a ceremony marking a short-lived local ceasefire in Ukraine. Dmitriev was also part of the Russian delegation, Bloomberg reported.
The Trump administration has increased its efforts to end the conflict in recent weeks. US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff are leading the diplomatic efforts.
Kushner said in a post on X that the US held “productive and substantive discussions with Ukraine, NATO, and our European partners” in Brussels on Thursday. He added that the discussions covered “security guarantees for Ukraine and a broader European security architecture.”
“Our objective is to address the security concerns of all sides through practical, mutually agreed arrangements that reduce the risk of future conflict,” Kushner wrote.
Trump has repeatedly described Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as the biggest obstacle to peace. According to Bloomberg, Trump has pressed Kyiv to make concessions, but Ukraine has rejected demands it considers unacceptable. Kyiv also wants security guarantees to ensure Russia does not attack again after a peace agreement. This remains a major obstacle in the negotiations.
The Kremlin has confirmed that Russia will hold trilateral talks with Ukraine and the United States in Abu Dhabi on November 10 and 11, Reuters reported.
Russian President Vladimir Putin's aide Vladimir Medinsky will lead Moscow's delegation as chief negotiator.
US envoy Steve Witkoff had said on November 2 that Washington would bring Russian and Ukrainian delegations together to discuss post-war security arrangements and ways to de-escalate the conflict.
