U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly considering a new international forum called the “Core‑5” or C5, which could include the United States, India, China, Russia, and Japan. The idea represents a significant shift from previous positions and comes amid ongoing trade and geopolitical tensions.
The proposal, which is currently unconfirmed, emerged in Washington this week. Reports suggest the C5 would bring together long-time rivals like China and Russia in a single framework, creating a contrast to traditional groups such as the G7. Sources cited by Politico indicate the idea appeared in a longer, unpublished version of the National Security Strategy, though this has not been independently verified. The White House has rejected the claims, stating that no alternate or classified version of the strategy exists.
The C5 concept aligns with Trump’s deal-focused approach to foreign policy. In the past, he has engaged with rival nations through direct talks, such as sending envoys to Russia and approving strategic sales to China. Experts say Trump tends to prioritise cooperation with powerful nations, regardless of ideological differences, often valuing strong leadership and spheres of influence.
The discussions come as trade tensions with India, China, and Russia remain, alongside issues such as the Ukraine war. Not long ago, Trump publicly highlighted concerns over India and Russia’s engagement with China, posting a photograph of PM Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Chinese President Xi Jinping with the caption, “Looks like we’ve lost India and Russia to deepest, darkest China. May they have a long and prosperous future together.”
Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Trump over the phone, discussing bilateral relations and regional developments. Modi described the conversation as “warm and engaging,” emphasising that India and the U.S. will continue collaborating for global peace, stability, and prosperity. While the C5 proposal remains in early stages, India’s inclusion highlights its growing strategic and economic importance on the world stage. Analysts suggest that participating in such a bloc could strengthen India’s voice in international affairs, though careful diplomacy would be needed given the inclusion of countries with conflicting interests.
