US President Donald Trump defended Chinese President Xi Jinping during his ongoing visit to Beijing after Xi reportedly described the United States as “perhaps being a declining nation.” Trump said the Chinese leader was referring to the condition of America under former President Joe Biden and not the current situation under his administration.
In a lengthy Truth Social post shared early Friday morning from Beijing, Trump wrote that Xi’s remarks were aimed at “the tremendous damage we suffered during the four years of Sleepy Joe Biden and the Biden Administration.” Trump further added, “On that score, he was 100% correct.”
Trump strongly criticised the previous administration in his statement. He blamed Biden’s government for “open borders, high taxes, transgender for everybody, men in women’s sports, DEI, horrible trade deals, rampant crime, and so much more.” Trump claimed these policies had weakened the country during Biden’s term.
Xi has for several years promoted the idea that “The East is rising and the West is declining.” The phrase has often been linked to the United States by Chinese leaders, state media, and political experts. They have pointed to political divisions, economic challenges, and social tensions in America as signs of a long-term decline in Western influence.
However, it is still unclear whether Xi made similar comments directly during his closed-door meetings with Trump this week in Beijing. Neither side has officially confirmed the exact details of those private discussions.
Trump insisted that Xi was “not referring to the incredible rise” seen in the United States during what he called the “16 spectacular months” of his administration. The US President claimed the country had witnessed major economic growth and improvement since his return to office.
In his post, Trump highlighted what he described as major achievements of his administration. He pointed to “all-time high stock markets and 401K’s,” along with a “record 18 trillion dollars” in investments entering the United States. Trump also said the country currently has the “best U.S. job market in history.”
The president also touched on the ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Referring to Iran, Trump wrote that the “military decimation of Iran” was “to be continued!” His remarks came at a time when uncertainty remains over the fragile ceasefire involving Iran.
Before leaving for China, Trump had already described the ceasefire as being on “massive life support.” Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance recently stated that the administration was “making progress” regarding the situation.
Trump and Xi held high-level talks in Beijing this week covering several major global issues. Their discussions focused on Iran, trade relations, Taiwan, and energy security. The meeting comes at a time when tensions between Washington and Beijing continue over strategic and economic matters.
During the talks, Xi described US-China relations as “the world’s most consequential relationship.” He also warned that Taiwan remained “the most important issue in China-US relations.” Xi cautioned that mishandling the Taiwan issue could create a “very dangerous situation.”
Trump also claimed that Xi assured him China would not provide military equipment to Tehran. According to Trump, the Chinese leader also offered assistance in helping resolve the conflict involving Iran.
The Beijing summit is being closely watched globally as both countries attempt to manage rising geopolitical tensions while maintaining communication on key international issues. The discussions between Trump and Xi are expected to play an important role in shaping future US-China relations.
