President-elect Donald Trump made significant announcements regarding his incoming administration, naming Karoline Leavitt as White House Press Secretary, Steven Cheung as Communications Director, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). The appointments reflect Trump’s focus on loyalty and experience within his team.
Karoline Leavitt, 27, will serve as the White House Press Secretary, making history as the youngest person ever to hold the role. Previously, Ronald Ziegler was the youngest, taking the position at 29 during President Nixon’s administration.
“Karoline Leavitt did a phenomenal job as the National Press Secretary on my Historic Campaign, and I am pleased to announce she will serve as White House Press Secretary,” Trump said in a statement. “Karoline is smart, tough, and has proven to be a highly effective communicator. I have the utmost confidence she will excel at the podium, and help deliver our message to the American People as we Make America Great Again.”
Leavitt, a New Hampshire native, has a robust political background. She worked in Trump’s press office during his first term and later served as Communications Director for Rep. Elise Stefanik. Leavitt also ran for Congress in 2022, securing the Republican primary but losing in the general election. Known for her strong on-camera presence, she has been a staunch defender of Trump’s policies.
Steven Cheung, a longtime Trump adviser, will take on the role of White House Communications Director. Known for his aggressive style, Cheung gained recognition for his combative approach during Trump’s campaign, where he directed sharp critiques at opponents.
Trump expressed his confidence in Cheung, saying, “I am thrilled to have him join my White House.”
A Sacramento native, Cheung’s career spans Republican politics and a stint with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. His communications expertise and loyalty to Trump have been central to his rise within the team.
Trump has tapped Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, calling it the “most important role” in his cabinet.
“For too long, Americans have been crushed by the industrial food complex and drug companies who have engaged in deception, misinformation, and disinformation when it comes to Public Health,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, his social media platform.
“The Safety and Health of all Americans is the most important role of any Administration, and HHS will play a big role in helping ensure that everybody will be protected from harmful chemicals, pollutants, pesticides, pharmaceutical products, and food additives that have contributed to the overwhelming Health Crisis in this Country,” he added.
Kennedy, a controversial figure for his health-related views, has faced criticism for promoting vaccine misinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, he has vowed to make medical research transparent. “I’m going to make sure scientific safety studies and efficacy are out there, and people can make individual assessments about whether that product is going to be good for them,” he stated in a recent interview.
These appointments highlight Trump’s strategy to assemble a team of trusted allies as he prepares for his second term, signalling a continuation of his unique approach to governance.
