United States redesignate Yemen's Houthi rebels as a "foreign terrorist organisation," according to Al Jazeera. This decision follows an executive order signed by former President Trump in January, instructing Secretary of State Marco Rubio to take all necessary steps against the Yemeni rebels, as reported by Al Jazeera on Tuesday.
In 2021, during his last days in the office, Trump designated the Houthis as a "foreign terrorist organisation" and a "Specially Designated Global Terrorist" (SDGT) entity. After taking office, former U.S. President Joe Biden's administration removed those designations, citing the humanitarian crisis in Yemen. However, it later reinstated the SDGT label after the Houthis began attacking commercial ships in the Red Sea following Israel's war in Gaza. "The Trump Administration's commitment to protecting our national security interests, the safety of the American people, and the security of the United States" is demonstrated by the Houthis' redesignation, according to the US State Department.
"The Executive Order sets in motion a process by which Ansar Allah, also known as the Houthis, will be designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation," the White House said in a statement announced on January 22, two days after Trump took office. According to a White House statement, the US is now working with its regional allies under Trump to eradicate the Houthis' operations and capabilities, deny them resources, and put an end to their attacks on US individuals and civilians, US allies, and Red Sea shipping. After the Houthis were re-designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO), the Executive Order instructed the USAID Administrator and the Secretary of State to jointly review UN partners, NGOs and contractors working in Yemen, according to the statement.
After this evaluation, the President will order USAID to sever relationships with organisations that have paid the Houthis or that have resisted international efforts to combat the Houthis while ignoring its terror activities and abuses.
