Meghalaya, Manipur, and Tripura individually celebrated their 50th Statehood Days on Friday with a colourful and grand event. In addition to Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, BJP President J.P. Nadda and several Union ministers and chief ministers of northeastern states welcomed the delegation.
“Greetings to the people of Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura on Statehood Day. These states, full of natural riches, represent the vibrant culture and unique traditions of our northeast. My best wishes to the citizens of these states for a happy and prosperous future,” the President said on Twitter.
Congratulating the people of the three states, the Vice-President said: “My heartiest greetings to the people of Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura on their state foundation day today. These states are known for their captivating beauty, diverse flora-fauna, rich cultural heritage and hard working people.”
Prime Minister Modi emphasized the achievements of the three northeastern states and envisioned their growth in his recorded speech.
Taking to twitter, Modi said: “Greetings to the people of Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura on their Statehood Days. These states are making vibrant contributions to India’s development. Praying for their constant progress.”
When the Nation celebrates its 100th birthday, the Prime Minister told the people that the next 25 years will be a period of decision, since the people will have to decide where India will be in every field.
“In the next 25 years, every Indian and the people of Tripura will put in their hardest work. This is a time for making up for the time lost due to foreign rule”.
In a virtual speech from Delhi, Shah spoke about how the princely state has developed itself in a wide range of sectors. “Various connectivity projects including rail links with Bangladesh have been undertaken under PM Narendra Modi’s guidance.”
Meghalaya was a part of Assam before becoming a state on January 21, 1972, and Tripura and Manipur were princely states before merging into the Indian Union in 1949.
Under the North Eastern Region (Re-Organisation) Act, 1971, all three states in the northeast became full-fledged states. A multitude of welfare and development programmes have been announced by all three states to mark the day.
Manipur, ruled by the BJP, is now preparing for elections to its 60-member Assembly on February 27 and March 3. Tripura and Meghalaya, ruled by the saffron party, will also go to crucial elections in February next year.
