The tripartite talks on Friday in the Senapati district, involving the Centre, the Manipur government, and the United Naga Council (UNC), aimed at discussing the demand to reverse the creation of seven districts in 2016. However, the talks did not produce any results, according to officials.
Demands have been made by the UNC to reverse the establishment of Kamjong, Pherzawl, Kakching, Kangpokpi, Tengnoupal, Noney, and Jiribam. These districts were established under O. Ibobi Singh's previous Congress administration. According to a joint statement released by the UNC, state government, and representatives of the central government, "the discussions focused on the issue of creation of seven districts by the Manipur government in December 2016."
"Representatives of the government of Manipur expressed inability to present a concrete proposal in view of certain difficulties. However, UNC expressed strong exceptions over non-submission of the concrete proposal and insisted that it be submitted in the next rounds of talks," the statement further read.
According to the statement, the discussion was held in an amicable setting, and all parties agreed that future progress would be made by engaging in a sustained manner in order to politically resolve the concerns while keeping in mind the prior agreements. The final week of January will see the next round of negotiations, it stated.
