A rather devastating mine explosion that took place in eastern Iran has called out global media attention. In what we call a devastating mine explosion at least 50 people lost their lives while 20 were reported to have sustained severe injuries. Al Jazeera reports that the incident has also raised concerns about the possibility that many more workers are trapped beneath the debris.
According to Al Jazeera, which cited the IRNA news agency, a methane gas leak at a coal mine in Tabas, which is situated 540 kilometres southeast of Tehran, Iran, caused a deadly explosion. 69 miners were put in danger in one of the tunnels when the explosion took place on Saturday night. The unexpected gas leak occurred at 9:00 p.m. (1730 GMT) on Saturday when the 69 miners were working in blocks B and C of the mine, according to the IRNA report.
Rescue operations in block C have begun, according to South Khorasan Province Governor Ali Akbar Rahimi, who made the announcement on state TV. He added that the block has a high methane density and that the procedure would take three to four hours. Masoud Pezeshkian, the president of Iran, sent his sincere condolences to the families of the Tabas coal mine explosion victims in the meantime. Authorities have been sent to the scene to look into the incident, he said.
“The news of the Tabas mine incident is very painful and impressive. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the compatriots who lost their loved ones in this incident and consider myself a partner in their grief. The Ministers of Labour and Security have been sent to Tabas to investigate and deal with the issue,” Pezeshkian said in a rough translation of his post on X:
