On Monday, as per the news, at least 7 individuals were killed and 16 others injured when a decisive bomb exploded outside the office of a pro-government peace committee in Wana, a city in South Waziristan, a erstwhile bastion of the Pakistani Taliban in the troubled northwest, as reported by the police. The attack took place in Wana, located in the South Waziristan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, as confirmed by local police chief Usman Wazir in a statement to The Associated Press. He stated that the bomb explosion targeted the office of the peace committee, which publicly resists the Pakistani Taliban. The committee also plays a role in resolving local disputes.
The bombing occurred a day after the military announced that its forces had killed 54 militants in a significant operation in the nearby North Waziristan district, following an attempted cross-border incursion from Afghanistan. Although no group has taken responsibility for Monday's attack yet, the Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), is likely to be blamed, as they frequently target both security forces and civilians.
The TTP is a distinct group, but it has strong ties with the Afghan Taliban, who took control of Afghanistan in August 2021 as U.S. and NATO forces were withdrawing from Afghanistan after 20 years of conflict.
Since the Taliban's takeover, many TTP leaders and fighters have found refuge in Afghanistan, with some living openly in Afghanistan. This development has strengthened the Pakistani Taliban's position.
Rescue teams and residents are actively working on the rescue operation. The injured victims have been taken to the hospital, with some reported to be in critical condition.
Police and security forces have sealed off the area and begun an investigation. Officials have stated that evidence is being gathered from the scene, and various aspects of the attack are being examined to identify those responsible.
Pakistan has seen a rise in terrorist incidents, especially in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces, since the ceasefire agreement with the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) collapsed in November 2022.
