French oil company TotalEnergies has signed an agreement to supply 400,000 metric tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) each year to the Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation. The supply will start next year, according to both companies.
The deal, announced during India Energy Week, implies that Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation will receive six shipments of LNG annually, mainly for industrial customers. Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, unveiled the 10th bidding round under the Open Acreage Licensing Policy (OALP) during the India Energy Week (IEW) 2025 at the Yashobhoomi Convention Centre in New Delhi. India is currently the fourth-largest buyer of LNG in the world.
According to the International Energy Agency, the country will need to double its annual imports by the end of the decade to keep up with the growing demand caused by rapid urbanisation and industrialisation. The Indian government aims to increase the share of natural gas in the country's energy mix from the current 6.2% to 15%.In a joint statement, GSPC said that the agreement with Total was in line with its plan to develop a long-term LNG portfolio and establish itself as one of India's top gas traders.
TotalEnergies sees India’s rapidly growing market as a key part of its expansion plans. At the same time, it needs to find buyers to match the large volume of U.S. LNG it has agreed to buy over the next ten years. Total inked a number of long-term agreements with primarily Asian purchasers last year, including one with the Indian Oil Corporation.
