The Deputy Commissioner of Kurram district in northwest Pakistan was injured on Saturday when attackers opened fire on his convoy. The development took place just days after a peace agreement was made between two groups involved in sectarian violence in the district.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kurram Javedullah Mehsud and three security officers were injured when people of the Kojalai Baba village, which is close to Bagan, opened fire on military vehicles, according to sources. Following the main Peshawar-Sadda-Thall-Parachinar road's reopening after an 85-day closure, Mehsud was in the region to discuss plans for an aid convoy to transport food supplies to the district. According to sources, the protesters who had blocked the main road were negotiating with government officials when the gunshots began. After being shot three times, Mehsud was taken to a hospital in the Lower Alizai tehsil for medical attention.
Three protestors were injured, according to official sources. A military official mentioned that they suspect local troublemakers may be involved in the attack. Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, a spokesperson for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, stated that the situation in Kurram is now under control. He assured that all necessary travel and security arrangements were in place to protect the convoy. The Deputy Commissioner (DC) is undergoing surgery, but his condition is stable and not life-threatening. Barrister Saif, who was at the scene with the Kohat Commissioner and Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), provided this information. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi and Provincial Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur both condemned the attack. Gandapur strongly denounced the shooting and asked senior officials to provide a report on the incident. He also wished a quick recovery to those injured in the attack.
"Such an incident after the Kurram peace agreement is highly regrettable and condemnable," said Gandapur. "The incident is a deliberate and malicious but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to sabotage the government's efforts for peace in Kurram," he said, mentioning those involved in the firing will face strict legal action. Kundi, the governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, strongly denounced the incident. "I pray for the speedy recovery of Deputy Commissioner Kurram Javed Mehsud and others injured," Kundi said. "The recurrence of firing incidents on the main highway in Lower Kurram is deeply concerning," he said claiming that it was a "heinous conspiracy" to undermine the Peace Jirga's (council) attempts to bring about enduring unity in the district.
"For sustainable peace in Kurram District, the positive role of the local population alongside the government is essential," he added. A peace agreement was made on Wednesday between the Alizai and Bagan tribes in the Kurram district after a deadly attack on passenger vans last month, which killed 57 people in northwest Pakistan. Sectarian violence between the two tribes led to the deaths of 133 people between November 21 and December 2.
