Hours after being suspended by the Trinamool Congress, MLA Humayun Kabir launched a blistering attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the party leadership. He accused Banerjee of doing RSS work and declared that she will be known as an ex-Chief Minister after the 2026 assembly elections.
Kabir, the Bharatpur MLA from West Bengal, recently sparked a major controversy for saying he would build a mosque designed like the Babri Masjid in Murshidabad. He questioned why the party kept him for more than a decade if it had issues about him.
“When she first came to power, she got 182 seats. I needed her. I was included in the party… Why was this done to me for 12–13 years? Why was I inducted into the party?" Kabir said as quoted by the news agency ANI.
He went on to accuse Mamata Banerjee of appeasement politics, saying that she builds temples with money collected from people while giving only allowances to Muslim clerics.
“Today, the CM builds Jagannath Temple by taking funds from people, they give funds for Durga Puja. Muslim clerics are given an allowance of Rs 3000; clubbing all allowances Rs 54,000 is being given. While Rs 1,10,000 is given to committees every year. She is doing RSS work," he added.
Kabir said that Mamata Banerjee will not return as Chief Minister after the 2026 elections. “The Chief Minister should be an ex-Chief Minister. In 2026, the Chief Minister will not become the Chief Minister, will not be sworn in, and will be branded as an ex-Chief Minister," he declared.
He also said he will form a new party and plans to contest 135 Assembly seats in the upcoming polls.
“I will announce a new party on December 22 and will field candidates on 135 Assembly seats (in West Bengal polls). I will fight against both the BJP and them (TMC). They can do whatever they want," he said as quoted by news agency PTI.
Kabir’s statements came shortly after his suspension from the party following the uproar over his plan to build a mosque that would resemble the Babri Masjid. His suspension was announced just two days before the foundation stone laying ceremony he had planned. Kabir had earlier told news agency IANS that the project, promised in December last year, would take three years to build and might draw “around two lakh people" for the start of the work, along with “400 prominent personalities" on stage.
Explaining the decision, senior party minister Firhad Hakim said that the TMC represents secular politics and that Kabir’s plan does not fit with the party’s position. “If the programme takes place, the law will take its own course. Mamata Banerjee is a tough leader. We are a secular party, we do not believe in such activities. Anyone can build a temple or a mosque, but why in the name of Babar? This is nothing but a BJP plan," he said.
The BJP meanwhile called the suspension a planned move between the TMC and Kabir ahead of the 2026 elections.
Union Minister and BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar said, “They are playing dirty politics in an attempt to please Hindu voters. They also built the Jagannath Cultural Centre in the temple’s name to please Hindus. Last time, Mamata Banerjee did not receive Hindu votes. It is a pre-planned game between the TMC and Humayun Kabir. After the election, he will be taken back into the party."
Kabir has faced public anger before. Last year he was criticised for saying that “throwing out 30 per cent Hindus" was needed, which led to several show cause notices from the TMC that he reportedly did not respond to.
