West Bengal Minister Tapas Roy on Tuesday claimed that the opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) was moving towards a split similar to the political divisions witnessed in Maharashtra. Speaking to reporters outside the state assembly, Roy said that the party was facing growing internal differences and dissatisfaction among its leaders.
The BJP MLA from Maniktala alleged that the TMC had given space to several people who had little political background. According to him, the contradictions within the party were now becoming visible. Roy said the developments within the opposition party pointed towards an unavoidable process of fragmentation.
Asserting that the TMC was heading towards a major crisis, Roy claimed that the party would eventually disappear from the political landscape of West Bengal. Referring to the current situation within the organisation, he said, "There is growing dissatisfaction among many leaders and legislators. The developments indicate that the party is heading towards a split, a situation similar to what happened in Maharashtra."
Roy, a veteran politician who joined the BJP from the TMC in 2024, maintained that discontent among party members was increasing. He suggested that the internal unrest could lead to further divisions within the opposition camp in the coming months.
However, senior TMC MLA Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay rejected the claims of a possible split. He asserted that the majority of the party's legislators would continue to remain loyal to party supremo Mamata Banerjee. Chattopadhyay also said that the senior leadership and old guards of the party would retain control over the organisation.
The TMC leader further alleged that efforts were being made by the ruling dispensation to encourage defections and weaken the opposition. Despite such attempts, he insisted that the Trinamool Congress remained united and there was no threat to its stability.
Adding to the political speculation, expelled TMC MLA Ritabrata Banerjee made sharp remarks against the party leadership. Banerjee, who is believed to be leading the rebel camp, claimed that the TMC had changed significantly from what it once represented.
Speaking outside the assembly, he alleged that the party had lost its original character and was no longer functioning under the influence of its top leadership. Banerjee said, "hijacked by I-PAC and no longer belongs to Mamata Banerjee".
His visit to the assembly premises, despite the House not being in session, attracted attention and fuelled further speculation about growing divisions within the party. The comments from both Roy and Banerjee have intensified discussions around internal challenges within the TMC, even as the party leadership continues to maintain that it remains united under Mamata Banerjee's leadership.
