The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is facing fresh internal turmoil after party MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar claimed that 20 TMC Members of Parliament have written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla expressing their willingness to align with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The development has sparked speculation about a possible split within the party's parliamentary wing.
Dastidar said that a section of TMC MPs believes the party should reconsider its political direction following its recent electoral setback in West Bengal. "We accepted the poll verdict in Bengal and believe our future political course should be aligned with the NDA," Dastidar said, indicating growing dissatisfaction among some lawmakers over the party's current position.
The latest development comes at a time when concerns over internal divisions within the TMC are already growing. Reports suggest that around 20 TMC MPs attended a closed-door meeting at an undisclosed location in Delhi on Sunday. The meeting took place while party chief Mamata Banerjee was in the national capital to participate in the INDIA bloc meeting.
According to party sources quoted by PTI, the MPs discussed possible future political options and raised concerns about the existing parliamentary leadership structure within the party. The gathering has intensified speculation that the rebellion that recently affected the party's legislative wing in West Bengal could now be spreading to its parliamentary ranks as well.
Sources familiar with the discussions said that no final decision was taken during the meeting. However, several MPs reportedly voiced concerns over the party leadership's response to the electoral defeat. Many participants felt that the leadership had not adequately examined the reasons behind the setback and was unwilling to address the issues that contributed to the poor performance.
A TMC leader aware of the discussions said, "The meeting was essentially about the future course. Several MPs expressed concern that the leadership was unwilling to acknowledge the reasons behind the party's electoral setback."
The controversy gained further momentum after a photograph from the meeting surfaced on social media on Monday. The image showed several TMC Lok Sabha MPs sitting around a table during the gathering. The photograph quickly fuelled fresh speculation about growing divisions within the party and the possibility of a larger rebellion in the future.
Senior TMC leader and MP Sougata Roy sought to downplay reports suggesting a major exodus from the party. While acknowledging that a separate meeting had taken place, he distanced himself from the gathering and said he was not involved in it.
"I have heard that some MPs held a separate meeting last night. Only they can say what transpired in the meeting. I was not contacted by them," Roy said.
Roy was also asked about reports claiming that the Bharatiya Janata Party was attempting to reach out to TMC MPs. Responding to the speculation, he said that he too had been approached but had rejected any such proposal.
"I told them I will remain with the TMC. At this age, it won't be possible for me to change camp," the four-term MP said.
The developments have added to the uncertainty within the TMC following its electoral setback. While no formal split has been announced and no final decision has emerged from the group of MPs, the claims made by Dastidar and the reported meeting in Delhi have intensified questions about the party's internal unity and its future political direction.
