Trinamool Congress leaders started a door-to-door campaign on Saturday to check the voter list. This comes amid allegations that the BJP is manipulating the electoral rolls before next year’s assembly elections in West Bengal.
Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim personally led the voter list verification drive in the Chetla area of south Kolkata. BJP is allegedly adding fake voters from other states to manipulate the voter list. To counter this, our party workers and I are going door-to-door to verify the voter list, Hakim told reporters. Meanwhile, local TMC leaders are also conducting a similar verification process in the Bhabanipur assembly constituency, which is represented by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Party workers are conducting the verification drive in other locations as well, following the instructions of Banerjee, who is also the TMC chief. According to the TMC, it was discovered that multiple people from various states were enrolled under the same EPIC number as West Bengali legitimate voters. Banerjee referred to them as "ghost voters." Speaking at the TMC's state conference on Thursday, the party leader charged that the BJP had utilised the "support of the Election Commission" to add fake voters from other states to the electoral records. The saffron party disputed the accusation.
Banerjee claimed that the BJP had used the same strategies in past elections in Delhi and Maharashtra. She cautioned that if the electoral rolls are not corrected, her party would hold a sit-in protest in front of the Election Commission office. Meanwhile, the Chief Electoral Office (CEO) of West Bengal clarified that the electoral roll update process is carried out by officials, with active involvement from Booth Level Agents (BLOs) appointed by political parties.
