The Andhra Pradesh government assigned the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the Tirupati Laddu adulteration incident. The SIT has been told to put the investigation on hold until the next Supreme Court hearing, which is set for October 3.
Director General of Police (DGP) for Andhra Pradesh, Dwaraka Tirumala Rao, stated that the suspension is a preventative step to guarantee the integrity of the investigation. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) was established to look into the Tirupati Laddu case.
Sarvashresth Tripathi, the Inspector General of Police for Guntur Range, led the investigation panel that was formed in the midst of a dispute regarding the presence of animal fats in Tirupati laddus. It will, however, stay suspended pending additional orders following the current hearing in the highest court on the subject.
On Monday, September 30, the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu came under fire from the Supreme Court for allegedly using tainted ghee to make laddus that were served as prasadam at the Tirumala Tirupati Temple.
Judges Bhushan R. Gavai and KV Viswanathan, who made up the bench, pointed out that there was insufficient evidence to show that the ghee was tampered with, and they chastised the state government for releasing an early statement when it was not required to substantiate the allegation that animal fat was used.
In a setback for the state government on the contentious matter, the bench said, “When you hold a constitutional office, it is expected that you exercise restraint…We expect Gods to be kept away from politics…Prima facie, there is no concrete proof at this stage to show that adulterated ghee was used in the laddus.” The hearing was rescheduled for October 3.
