The debate over the contents of Tirupati laddus has heated up since a lab report confirmed the use of fish oil and beef fat in the preparation of the laddus for the holy Tirupati temple. Amid brewing controversy, Pawan Kalyan, the deputy chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, called for the establishment of a "Sanatana Dharma Rakshana Board" to address issues related to Hindu temples.
In a statement he made on X, he said, “We are all deeply disturbed with the findings of animal fat (fish oil, pork fat and beef fat) mixed in Tirupati Balaji Prasadam. Many questions to be answered by the TTD board constituted by YCP Government then. Our Government is committed to taking stringent action possible. But this throws light on many issues surrounding the desecration of temples, its land issues and other dharmic practices.”
According to him, this is high time to establish a “Sanatana Dharma Rakshana Board” at the national level to look into all the issues related to temples across India. “A debate has to happen at a National level by all the policymakers, religious heads, judiciary, citizens, media and all others in their respective domains. I think we all should come together to put an end to the desecration of Sanatana Dharma in any form,” said he.
In a report, National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) Centre for Analysis & Learning in Livestock and Food (CALF0—a private laboratory that tests milk and milk products, animal feed, and ghee—found that samples of the ghee used to make Tirupati laddus contained foreign fats such as fish oil, palm oil, beef tallow, and lard, which is made by rendering pig fatty tissue. Anam Venkata Ramana Reddy, the spokesperson for the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP), shared a copy of the report.
In order to bring up the matter, Andhra IT Minister Nara Lokesh also joined the TDP and expressed his shock at finding that Reddy's government was using animal fat rather than ghee. The TDP's accusations, however, were denied by senior YSRCP leader YV Subba Reddy, who presided over the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams during the previous government, calling them "malicious".
