TikTok is once again available for download on Apple and Google app stores in the U.S. after President Donald Trump postponed the enforcement of a ban on the platform.
The app, owned by the Chinese tech company ByteDance, was taken down from both stores on January 18 following a law requiring ByteDance to either sell TikTok or face a ban in the U.S.
The widely used social media app, with over 170 million users in the U.S., temporarily halted its services for a day before resuming operations after receiving assurances from Trump that the ban would be delayed.
The temporary suspension of TikTok led thousands of users to switch to RedNote, a Chinese social media app, referring to themselves as "TikTok refugees."
After nearly a month, the TikTok app was once again available for download in the U.S. through the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
On his first day in office, Trump signed an executive order extending the enforcement of a TikTok ban until April 5. TikTok has faced ongoing challenges in the U.S., with the government arguing that its Chinese ownership and access to American user data pose a national security threat. In response, TikTok has denied sharing U.S. user data with the Chinese government and claimed that the law requiring it to be sold or banned infringes on the First Amendment rights of its American users.
During his first term, Trump initially backed a ban on TikTok but later changed his stance, stating that he had a "warm spot" for the app.
TikTok CEO Shou Chew was present at Trump's inauguration ceremony. Trump has proposed a joint ownership structure for TikTok, with half of the company being owned by American entities.
