Norway, Ireland, and Spain have collectively decided to recognise Palestine as a state, with the formal acknowledgment slated to take effect on May 28, 2024.
Norway's Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Store, underscored the importance of preserving the two-state solution amid ongoing conflict, emphasising its potential to offer a political resolution for both Israelis and Palestinians.
Store stressed that peace in the Middle East hinges on the establishment of a Palestinian state, asserting that it serves as a fundamental prerequisite for achieving lasting stability in the region.
The decision to recognise Palestine sends a significant message encouraging other nations to emulate Norway and several European counterparts in acknowledging the Palestinian state, stated the Prime Minister.
Ireland's Prime Minister, Simon Harris, declared his nation's official recognition of Palestine during a press conference, marking a historic milestone for both Ireland and Palestine. Harris expressed confidence that additional countries would follow suit in taking this diplomatic stride.
Harris also stated that he has conversed with several other leaders and counterparts, expressing confidence that additional countries will follow suit in taking this significant step in the coming weeks.
Spain's Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, announced that his country would recognise the Palestinian state.
Sanchez criticised Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, for disregarding the international community's calls, citing ongoing bombing of civilian infrastructure and hindrance of crucial aid.
He emphasised that the recognition of Palestine "marks the beginning rather than the end," affirming Spain's commitment to exerting pressure on the international community for further action.
In response to these developments, Caroline Gennez, Belgium's Development Cooperation Minister, urged Belgium to follow suit and recognise Palestinian statehood, citing Norway and Spain's recent decisions. She expressed confidence in receiving support from her colleagues, deeming it a historic opportunity not to be missed.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry announced the recall of its ambassadors from Ireland and Norway following the decisions made by the two countries.
Despite a UN call for an immediate cease-fire, Israel has continued its offensive in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023. Over 35,600 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed, and nearly 79,900 others injured since the attack by Hamas. Gaza suffers from widespread destruction and a dire shortage of essential supplies. Israel faces accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice.
