On Tuesday evening, more than 2,000 members and supporters of the BJP, Hindu Munnani, and other Hindu organisations gathered for a demonstration at Palanganatham in Madurai city. The protest took place after receiving approval from the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, despite initial objections from the district administration and police.
During the demonstration, the protestors chanted slogans in praise of Bhagwan Murugan and accused the DMK of being anti-Hindu. They hailed the event as a success in their efforts to "protect Thiruparankundram", emphasising that the court’s decision to grant permission validated their cause.
Earlier that day, the police detained several Hindu outfit leaders, including Hindu Munnani state president Kadeshwara C Subramanian in Tiruppur and BJP state general secretary M Muruganandham in Thanjavur.
During the protest in Madurai, BJP leader H Raja strongly criticised Madurai Collector MS Sangeetha and the police for detaining party members across the state, arguing that the prohibitory order was only in effect within the district. BJP state secretary Raama Sreenivasan also condemned the government for filing cases against protesters.
Hindu Munnani state organiser Bhakthan accused the state government of failing to take action against those visiting Tasmac outlets or consuming ganja, while at the same time blocking their right to protest.
Security in Madurai, particularly in Tiruparankundram, was tightened under the supervision of City Police Commissioner J Loganathan. Despite the heavy police presence around the Subramaniyaswamy Temple, members of Hindu Munnani and BJP managed to enter the temple premises and stage protests both inside and outside before being arrested for violating prohibitory orders.
Devotees were granted permission to offer prayers at the Subramaniyaswamy Temple, but access to the Kasi Viswanathar Temple and Sikkandar Dargah was restricted. The Thiruparankundram area appeared primarily deserted, with most shops remaining closed.
The Thoothukudi police detained over 70 individuals associated with Hindu Munnani (HM), Hindu Makkal Katchi (HMK), and the BJP, who were on their way to Madurai to participate in a protest at Thirupparankundram hill. Earlier, the Kulasekarapattinam police placed HM’s south district secretary, Arunachalam, under house arrest for allegedly using a tom drum to provoke the public into marching toward Madurai. Similarly, the Thattarmadam police placed HM state administrative committee member Sakthivel, from Pooludaiyarpuram, under house arrest to prevent his participation in the protest.
The Thoothukudi police maintained a strong presence at bus stands and railway stations to prevent protests from escalating. As part of their efforts, they arrested 13 individuals, including Hindu Munnani's North district secretary Sivalingam, Ottapidaram union secretary Ragavendra, and five others who were travelling on a Madurai-bound bus at the new bus stand.
Additionally, four Hindu Makkal Katchi (HMK) members, who were on their way to participate in the Thirupparankundram hillock temple issue, were detained at Kovilpatti railway station.
Among those detained was HMK state joint secretary Ponnaiah, who was preparing to board the Mumbai Express at Kovilpatti railway station on Tuesday. The police also took into custody HMK district secretary Lakshmikandhan, town president Sreenivasan, and vice-president Ramesh at the same station, with the Kovilpatti East police handling the arrests.
