A man carrying guns and a fake pass was arrested on Saturday near Donald Trump's rally in Coachella Valley, California, according to the police. The Riverside County Sheriff's Office stated that the arrest took place at a checkpoint close to the intersection of Coachella's Avenue 52 and Celebration Drive moments before the rally was set to be organised on Saturday.
According to the authorities, this could be the third assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump. The Police apprehended the suspect, Vem Miller, at a checkpoint approximately half a mile from the rally's entrance. “We probably stopped another assassination attempt,” Riverside County Sheriff, Chad Bianco, said, adding that Miller was planning to kill Trump.
The 49-year-old suspect from Las Vegas was arrested by the police and was found carrying fake press credentials, VIP passes, and firearms. A black SUV that the suspect drove was pulled over at a security checkpoint outside of Trump's rally. Afterwards, Miller was freed on a USD 5,000 bail after being accused of unlawfully possessing a loaded gun and ammunition. Miller is thought to be a part of a right-wing anti-government organization, according to police.
“The incident did not impact the safety of former president Trump or attendees of the event,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release. The US Attorney's Office, US Secret Service, and FBI released a joint federal statement about the incident. “The US Attorney’s Office, US Secret Service, and FBI are aware of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office’s arrest on Saturday. The US Secret Service assesses that the incident did not impact protective operations and Former President Trump was not in any danger. While no federal arrest has been made at this time, the investigation is ongoing,” read the statement.
It further added, “The US Attorney’s Office, US Secret Service, and FBI extend their gratitude to the deputies and local partners who helped ensure the safety of last night’s events.” The rally was heavily guarded, with media representatives and VIP ticket holders being directed through several crossroads where state and local law enforcement conducted extensive car searches, utilizing K-9 units as part of their operations.
In July, during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, a gunman tried to assassinate Trump, but he narrowly escaped when the bullet grazed his ear. In September, Secret Service agents found a man with a rifle hiding near Trump's golf course in Palm Beach. He was charged with attempting to assassinate Trump, but since then, he has pleaded not guilty.
