When Sanjaya Baru’s book, The Accidental Prime Minister (Baru was former PM Dr Manmohan Singh’s media advisor until 2009) hit the stands, it shocked the nation, for the premise of the book was simple but an effective one – about the Prime Minister of India being a puppet and a shadow PM to the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. This extra constitutional authority of India was all that was required to make the book stand out and the fact that the Congress party was mired in various scams, helped to make it more plausible. But, now, it seems that the movie ‘The accidental Prime Minister’, which is based on Baru’s book, is all set to hit the main theaters around January 11th.
The talented actor Anupam Kher would be essaying the role of the then Honorable PM Dr Manmohan Singh, during the UPA years. And from what we can make out, he has certainly gone all out to essay the role perfectly from copying Singh’s trademark walk to his voice, mannerisms and even his speech. In fact, there’s hardly any actor who could have done a good job as Anupam Kher. Even after reviewing the trailer for the first time, you are left with the impression that it is Manmohan Singh himself, starring in the lead role. The other actors essaying various roles from Sonia, Rahul to Priyanka are equally credible as the characters they represent and mange to sound just ‘right’. But there is one theory doing the rounds that this movie is being released, just in time for elections which is poppycock, for elections take place all year in India. There would be a state election taking place in some state or the other and to try and allege the current expected release as an act of political machinations is nothing but the Congress party, trying to hide its dismal record at governance, where it failed in every sense of the word. There are several movies which hit the Cinemas with controversies before elections like Udta Punjab, Parzania, Firaaq, Mersal and many others.
But getting back to the trailer, it has certainly managed to stand out for all the right reasons – and one of the reasons why both the book and the upcoming movie are likely to find more traction among the public is on account of the fact that the events, contained in these still continue to resonate to this day. The scams carried out by the UPA masters, are still being investigated, with reports being filed and naturally, a movie that expands on the theme would definitely be interesting, to say the least. It has already started a slanging match between the BJP and the Congress which had shot itself in the foot by first screaming for freedom of expression and now, for banning the movie in Madhya Pradesh.
Since then, the Congress has gone into a huddle since they cannot file any defamation against Baru as most of the incidents contained in the book as well as the movie, are based on actual events and evidence exists, backing up the same. All said and done, the trailer which lasts only a few minutes shows Kher in his all powerful role as the Puppet Prime Minister. While the incidents portrayed in the book and in the soon to be released movie would doubtless be contested strongly by the Congress party and its supporters, there is no denying the fact that Anupam Kher is a perfectionist and one who is superbly talented. It is not hard to act out the role of an aggressive personality or an outspoken one, but to essay the role of a man who was often derided for keeping mum during one of the chaotic periods of Modern India is not just hard, but a near impossible one to perfect – but that’s exactly what Anupam Kher seems to have done in the movie, “The Accidental Prime Minister”
