Tension flared in Jaora town, located in Madhya Pradesh's Ratlam district, on Friday after body parts of a bovine animal were discovered strewn across the premises of a local temple. Officials reported that the incident occurred at the Jagannath Mahadev temple during the early hours of the day, prompting an immediate police investigation.
Following the discovery, Hindu organisations staged protests condemning the act. Eyewitnesses recounted that police responded by firing teargas shells and resorting to lathi charges to disperse the demonstrators and restore order.
The police subsequently arrested two individuals, Salman Mevati (24) and Shaqir Qureshi (19), on charges related to allegedly throwing the bovine animal's body parts onto the temple grounds. Additionally, authorities demolished illegal structures found at their residences as part of the response to the incident.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Manoj Kumar Singh informed reporters that two individuals riding a motorcycle were responsible for throwing body parts of a bovine animal onto the temple premises. The police subsequently tracked down and arrested the suspects under charges related to offending religious sentiments and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav instructed the police and administration to take strong action against those accountable for the incident. He also appealed for calm, stating that efforts were made to disturb harmony in the town, but timely interventions prevented the situation from escalating, stated Singh.
Following the incident, Hindu organisations in Jaora called for a town shutdown and blocked a four-lane road in protest. Police subsequently apprehended the two perpetrators and, in coordination with civic authorities, demolished illegal parts of their residences, according to Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Rakesh Khakha from Ratlam.
A complaint was filed by Gaurav Puri Goswami, stating that between 2 am and 3 am, an unidentified individual threw the body parts of a bovine animal onto the temple grounds, causing offence to Hindu sentiments, as per a police statement. Security has been heightened in the town in response to the incident, police added.
Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Jitu Patwari, on X, condemned the actions of anti-social elements in Jaora, describing their behaviour as reprehensible. He called for a swift and thorough investigation into the incident, urging the state government to mete out severe punishment to those responsible for stoking animosity in society.
Local BJP MP Sudhir Gupta also denounced the incident, directing both administration and police officials to take stringent action against the accused individuals.
Jaora MLA Rajendra Pandey echoed these sentiments, terming the incident unfortunate and demanding strict accountability for the perpetrators involved.
Shahar Qazi Hafiz Bhuru of Jaora town appealed to the community through a letter, urging them to uphold peace and harmony amidst the situation.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident near Jaora town, a truck carrying 26 cattle overturned near Bhuteda toll booth on Friday evening, resulting in the death of 14 bovines, as confirmed by officials. Upon learning of the incident, protesting Hindu activists rushed to the scene and set the truck on fire, according to eyewitnesses.
