Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar, the Minister of State for Home, was taken into custody by the police today after leading a dramatic protest in support of candidates for the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) Group 1 services. He had organised a dharna and a 'Chalo Secretariat' rally in Hyderabad, calling for the postponement of the upcoming Group 1 Mains exam.
Kumar joined candidates calling for a rescheduling of the exam at the Ashok Nagar protest, which was centred on the area's civil services coaching facilities. In the midst of anti-state shouts, Kumar spoke with the candidates face-to-face and heard their complaints about the exam schedule and associated GOs.
To address the matter with Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, the minister tried to march into his office accompanied by a sizable contingent of supporters. But police action prevented them from moving forward and Kumar had to speak to the crowd from atop a car before he was taken into custody. Despite the High Court's legal approval for the tests, Kumar continued to support the candidates' requests by holding a dharna beside the Ambedkar statue close to the Secretariat after his initial imprisonment.
State director general of Police Jitender encouraged candidates to voice their concerns in a non-violent manner without upsetting the people in reaction to the growing protests. He underlined that although complaints can be democratically expressed, disturbances of the peace must be prevented. The demonstrations, which have gotten more intense in the last week, include earlier instances in which candidates who insisted on deferring the Mains exam from October 21 to October 27 were caned by police.
In the face of mounting political and public criticism, the situation is still tense as both parties maintain their viewpoints on how the TSPSC Group 1 Mains exam should be conducted.
