Telangana MP and state BJP president Bandi Sanjay Kumar was detained after midnight on Wednesday from his residence in Karimnagar ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state. Telangana police accused him of being associated with the SSC Hindi examination question paper’s alleged leak.
BJP has said that Bandi Sanjay Kumar has been taken into custody on “fabricated" charges of being involved in a secondary school paper leak.
Mild tension prevailed at his residence after his family members and party workers resisted the arrest. According to sources, Sanjay has lodged a complaint with the Lok Sabha Speaker’s office alleging that he was ‘arrested after midnight without a warrant’.
Some videos have emerged showing the 51-year-old leader being dragged by the police. He was subsequently taken to Nalgonda district's Bommala Ramaram police station.
Sanjay said that it was an attempt by the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Government to disrupt the arrangements being made for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Telangana on April 8 to flag off the Vande Bharat Express from Secunderabad to Tirupati, and inaugurate projects worth over Rs 10,000 crore.
After Bandi Sanjay Kumar was taken into custody by the police, BJP supporters staged a protest in Karimnagar and burned the effigy of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and demanded the release of their party leader.
Reacting to Bandi's arrest, BJP leader Amit Malviya alleged that his party colleague was arrested by the KCR government on fabricated charges.
"In a midnight operation, Telangana police has arrested BJP state President Bandi Sanjay Kumar on fabricated charges of being involved in a secondary school paper leak. This won’t end well for KCR," Malviya tweeted.
BJP state general secretary Premender Reddy announced that the party is planning to stage a statewide protest against the 'illegal' arrest of Bandi Sanjay Kumar.
