India on Thursday, October 8, condemned attacks targeting two airports in Saudi Arabia that killed three and injured 36 civilians. New Delhi strongly objected to attacks on civilian infrastructure and expressed solidarity with the Saudi government and people.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said, “India condemns the attacks over the past few days targeting Abha International Airport and King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, which have resulted in civilian deaths and injuries.”
“The targeting of civilian infrastructure is completely unacceptable,” the MEA said.
India also offered condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones in the attacks. “We express our deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their loved ones. We wish speedy recovery for those injured,” the statement said.
New Delhi also reiterated its support for Saudi Arabia. “We express solidarity and stand with the people and government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” the MEA added.
According to Saudi authorities, three people were killed and several others injured in attacks reportedly carried out by Houthi militants over the past two days. The attacks targeted Abha International Airport and King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.
Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation said two people were killed and 28 others injured in an attack on Abha International Airport. It also reported one death and eight injuries following an attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.
The attacks come amid a sharp escalation in hostilities between the Iran-backed Houthi group and Saudi Arabia. The Houthis have targeted Saudi border areas, energy facilities and civilian infrastructure with armed drones and missiles in recent weeks.
In response to the attacks, Saudi-led coalition forces said they destroyed 82 military targets belonging to the Houthi militia in Yemen. The coalition said the strikes followed attacks on civilian facilities in Saudi Arabia, including King Khalid International Airport and Abha International Airport.
The Houthi group, which is based in Yemen, has continued attacks against Saudi targets since July. The United Nations has said the ongoing fighting has displaced more than 200,000 people within Yemen.
Last month, the Houthis also seized the entire western coastline along the Red Sea. The development came amid some of the deadliest fighting in the country in recent years.
