Tamil Nadu has overtaken Gujarat and Maharashtra to become India’s leading textile exporter, according to the latest official data. The state recorded textile exports worth USD 7,997.17 million in the financial year 2024–25. This marks a major achievement for Tamil Nadu and reflects its growing strength in the textile sector.
The state has shown steady growth over the past few years. In 2020–21, Tamil Nadu’s textile exports were valued at USD 6,193.39 million. Over the next four years, this number increased significantly. The rise highlights a consistent expansion in production and export capacity. It also shows the state’s ability to remain stable in a competitive global market.
Tamil Nadu’s share in India’s total textile exports is also noteworthy. The country’s overall textile exports stood at USD 36,610 million in 2024–25. Out of this, Tamil Nadu alone contributed 21.84 per cent. This means that more than one-fifth of India’s textile exports came from the state, making it the top contributor in this sector.
The rankings are based on data from the National Import-Export Record for Yearly Analysis of Trade (NIRYAT). This platform provides detailed insights into export performance across states. It helps track growth patterns and understand which regions are leading in different sectors of trade.
With Tamil Nadu taking the top position, Gujarat and Maharashtra have moved to second and third place, respectively. Gujarat recorded textile exports of USD 5,646.01 million. Maharashtra followed with exports worth USD 3,831.29 million. Both states remain important players in the textile industry, but they now lag behind Tamil Nadu in terms of export value.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin highlighted the role of the state government’s efforts in achieving this milestone. He said, "Tamil Nadu's export volume of textiles, which was USD 6,193.39 million in 2020-21 due to the planned actions of the Dravidian Model government, rose to USD 7,997.17 million in the next four years. Overall, in India's exports, Tamil Nadu accounts for 21.84 per cent." His statement points to the impact of planned policies and focused governance in boosting the sector.
The state’s strong textile base has played a key role in this success. Tamil Nadu has long been known for its well-established textile and garment industry. It has a large network of manufacturing units and skilled workers. These factors have helped the state increase its export capacity and maintain a strong presence in global markets.
This development is significant for India’s overall export performance. A strong contribution from one state can positively impact the national economy. Tamil Nadu’s rise shows how regional strengths can drive growth in key sectors like textiles.
The consistent increase in export figures suggests that Tamil Nadu is not just experiencing short-term growth. Instead, it reflects a stable and expanding industry. With continued focus on production and exports, the state is likely to maintain its leading position in the coming years.
