Taiwan has strongly criticised Bangladesh's comments in a joint statement with China, asserting that Taiwan is a sovereign nation, not subordinate to China. The statement followed a meeting on March 28 between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Bangladesh's interim government leader, Muhammad Yunus, in Beijing. In the joint statement, the two countries opposed Taiwan's independence and supported the "One China" principle. In response, Taipei stated that such remarks misrepresent Taiwan's status and cannot alter the internationally recognised situation across the Taiwan Strait. The Taiwanese Foreign Ministry emphasised that Taiwan signifies a sovereign and independent country and cannot be considered subordinate to China.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterates that the Republic of China (Taiwan) is a sovereign and independent country and is not subordinate to the People's Republic of China. Any statement that distorts Taiwan's sovereign status cannot change the internationally recognised status quo across the Taiwan Strait," the statement said, referring to Taiwan and China by their official names. "The government will firmly defend national sovereignty and dignity and jointly safeguard the values of democracy and freedom, regional peace, stability and development with like-minded friendly nations," it stated.
The Taiwanese Foreign Ministry has called on Bangladesh to enhance economic and trade ties, urging the country to do so "with a pragmatic and open attitude" and to play an active role in "promoting democracy, peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region."
On March 28, Yunus and Xi met in Beijing during Yunus' three-day visit to China.
China views Taiwan as a breakaway province and has demanded that countries sever ties with Taiwan and recognise the "One China" policy, which asserts that there is only one China, with Beijing as its capital. Beijing has declared its intention to reunify Taiwan with China, even by force if necessary.
In a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Xi emphasised that China and Bangladesh should continue strengthening their mutual trust and provide steadfast support for each other on core interests and major concerns for both countries.
