Switzerland will deploy around 4,000 troops within its territory to strengthen security arrangements during the upcoming G7 summit, which will take place in neighbouring France from June 15 to 17. The move comes as world leaders and senior delegations prepare to gather in the French town of Evian-les-Bains, located on the shores of Lake Geneva and close to the Swiss border.
The summit is expected to bring together leaders of some of the world's largest economies, including US President Donald Trump. The presence of several high-profile leaders and international delegations has prompted authorities to put extensive security measures in place. Swiss officials have also indicated that protests are expected during the event, increasing the need for close monitoring and coordination.
According to the Swiss army, the scale of the summit and its location near Switzerland require strong cooperation between military and civilian authorities. The unit responsible for planning and managing the Swiss Armed Forces said additional support is necessary to ensure security throughout the period of the gathering.
In a statement, the Swiss army's Defence Group said, "The proximity to the border presents a major challenge for security authorities in the cantons of Vaud, Geneva and Valais. As a result, the Federal Council and Parliament have decided on a subsidiary security deployment of the army."
The military deployment will focus on protecting important infrastructure and supporting security agencies. Troops will help safeguard key facilities, including Geneva Airport, which is expected to witness increased activity during the summit. They will also strengthen surveillance along border areas and monitor major transport routes that could be used by delegates and visitors travelling to and from the event.
Swiss military personnel will additionally oversee security operations around Lake Geneva, which lies between Switzerland and France and is expected to play an important role during the summit. Authorities believe enhanced monitoring of the lake and surrounding areas is necessary because of the large number of international visitors expected in the region.
Apart from the deployment of ground troops, Switzerland's air force will also increase its security operations. Air policing activities will be intensified throughout the summit period to ensure the safety of the airspace around the venue and nearby regions. The authorities have announced that temporary airspace restrictions will be enforced from June 10 to June 19.
The Swiss army said the air force will provide specialised support, including counter-drone systems designed to detect and respond to potential drone-related threats. Such measures have become increasingly important at major international events because drones can pose security risks if misused.
In addition, the military will maintain protection against possible nuclear, biological and chemical threats during the summit. These precautionary measures are part of a broader security strategy aimed at ensuring the safety of participants, residents and infrastructure throughout the event.
The G7 summit is one of the most important annual gatherings of world leaders and requires extensive planning from host nations and neighbouring countries. With Evian-les-Bains located close to Swiss territory, authorities on both sides of the border are working together to manage security challenges and ensure the smooth conduct of the event.
Swiss officials believe the deployment of troops, enhanced border surveillance, tighter airspace controls and additional protective measures will help maintain security during the high-profile summit. The operation reflects the significant preparations being undertaken ahead of the arrival of world leaders in the region later this month.
