On Tuesday, the Supreme Court declined to halt the ongoing panchayat elections in Punjab, stating that staying elections on the day of voting would lead to "chaos." Chief Justice DY Chandrachud led a bench that heard the petitions seeking a stay on the panchayat elections, which started at 8 am in the state on Tuesday.
"If polling has started today, how can we intervene at this stage? Probably the high court realised the gravity of it and vacated the stay on the elections," said the bench, including Justices Manoj Misra and JB Pardiwala.
"There will be chaos if we stay the polling that too on the polling day," Chief Justice DY Chandrachud remarked. Nonetheless, the Supreme Court consented to consider the appeals against the Punjab and Haryana High Court's ruling permitting panchayat elections in Punjab.
In a major decision, the Punjab and Haryana High Court recently rejected about 1,000 petitions that were asking for the cancellation of panchayat elections. The polling process had previously been halted by the high court.
