The Supreme Court issued a landmark decision mandating the implementation of 1/3rd women’s reservation in the elections for the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).
Effective immediately, a woman will hold the prestigious position of SCBA President and Treasurer for the upcoming 2024-2025 term, as mandated by the Supreme Court.
The bench of Justices Surya Kant and KV Viswanathan directed that one office bearer position will be exclusively reserved for women on a rotational basis, starting with the President for the upcoming term.
The Court also specified that the junior executive committee must include at least three women out of nine members, and the senior executive committee should have two out of six.
This unprecedented move underscores the Court's commitment to ensuring gender equality within the legal profession and its governing bodies. By reserving the top position for a woman, the Supreme Court aims to set a strong example and encourage more inclusive practices across all levels of the judiciary and legal community.
Legal experts have hailed the decision as a significant step forward in rectifying gender imbalances in the legal sector. Many express optimism that this move will pave the way for more reforms aimed at empowering women within the law profession.
The SCBA is set to hold its elections this month, and with this new directive, it is expected that a number of highly qualified female candidates will come forward to lead the association.
This decision not only promotes diversity but also signals a broader commitment to empowering women in the legal sector. As the SCBA prepares for its upcoming elections, the anticipation is high for a more inclusive and representative leadership that reflects the diversity of the legal community.
