Former UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman has sparked fresh controversy with her recent speech at the Heritage Foundation, a prominent right-wing think tank in Washington, D.C. In her address, Braverman echoed the rhetoric of former U.S. President Donald Trump, stating that Britain must "Make Britain Great Again." She also issued a stark warning, claiming that the UK could “fall into the hands of Muslim fundamentalism” and risk becoming an adversary of the West, akin to Iran, within the next two decades.
Braverman, known for her hard-right stance within the UK’s Conservative Party, used the platform to express her strong endorsement of Trump’s leadership. She celebrated his potential return to office as a decisive moment for the fall of "progressive thinking" in the West. Alongside her praise for Trump, she also voiced support for U.S. Vice President JD Vance.
Her remarks are the latest in a series of controversial statements that have defined her political career. Previously, Braverman made headlines for saying it was her "dream" to deport immigrants to Rwanda, as well as suggesting that homelessness was a "lifestyle choice" for some individuals. Her hardline approach led to her dismissal as Home Secretary by then-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in 2023.
In this latest speech, Braverman openly criticised the policies of the Labour-led UK government, positioning herself as a staunch opponent of its governance while aligning herself with the American right-wing movement.
“Vice-president JD Vance said at the National Conservatism conference, at which I also spoke in the summer, that the UK was going to be the first Islamist nation with nuclear weapons. I don’t think he was joking," said Braverman, according to a London Economic Report.
She even discussed how, in the next two decades, the UK and not China or Russia could be the greatest threat to the US.
“Is it an impossibility that 20 years from now it will be the UK, not China or Russia, that will emerge as the greatest strategic threat to the USA?," she asked.
Braverman blamed the "broken leadership" of the UK for the same. She also discussed the spread of Sharia law across the UK.
“Born out of a broken relationship and weak leadership. What happens if the UK falls into the hands of Muslim fundamentalism, our legal system gets substituted for Sharia Law and our nuclear capabilities vest in a regime not too dissimilar to that of Iran today?", she said.
“Regardless of whether one thinks that is a realistic outcome, which I do not, should we not have the courage to ask these questions?", she added.
In her speech, former Home Secretary Suella Braverman highlighted the growing divide between UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and U.S. President Donald Trump. She argued that the two leaders "could not be more at odds," despite Trump recently offering praise for Starmer.
On January 25, Trump told reporters that the UK Prime Minister was “a very good person” and that he believed Starmer had done “a very good job thus far.” This was followed by a 45-minute phone call between the two leaders. However, Braverman dismissed the idea of a strong UK-US alliance under the Labour government, asserting that relations between the two nations were "in tatters."
"Under Keir Starmer, the UK is now more likely than ever to worship at the altar of punitive net-zero policies, bend the knee at the cross of a distorted notion of human rights and submit to the will of supranational institutions rather than sticking up for the UK’s national security and long-term allies," she said.
Braver's man's husband, Rael Braverman, joined Nigel Farage's Reform Party. Many are speculating that she could take a similar path.
