In a significant development, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has established a committee with prominent individuals to oversee the finalization of curriculum, textbooks, and learning resources for classes 3 to 12. This committee includes renowned figures such as author and Infosys Foundation chair Sudha Murthy, accomplished singer Shankar Mahadevan, and economist and member of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council Sanjeev Sanyal.
According to reports, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has established a 19-member National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC) to spearhead the development of curriculum, teaching resources, and learning materials for classes 3 to 12. As per an internal note seen by HT, the committee will be led by MC Pant, the Chancellor of the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA).
The primary objective of the committee is to align the curriculum with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE), a part of the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Although the final NCF-SE has been submitted to the Union Ministry of Education, it is yet to be made public. The NSTC holds the authority to revise existing textbooks for classes 1 and 2 in line with NCF requirements, facilitating a seamless transition.
The committee operates under the co-chairmanship of Manjul Bhargav, a mathematics professor at Princeton University, and comprises members from diverse domains, including mathematician Sujatha Ramdorai, badminton player U Vimal Kumar, and others. The NSTC will collaborate with Curriculum Area Groups (CAGs), each focused on specific subjects outlined in the NCF-SE, such as mathematics, science, and social sciences.
Chamu Krishna Shastry, the chairperson of Bhartiya Bhasha Samiti, noted that more than 1,000 subject experts will be engaged across 11 CAGs to facilitate curriculum development and textbook design. The aim is to finalize the process by the end of the current academic year, ensuring the availability of new textbooks for the upcoming session. Additionally, a National Oversight Committee (NOC) has been established to provide comprehensive guidance and alignment of all materials with NCF-SE, as per senior NCERT officials.
