India achieved a major milestone in its aviation and defence manufacturing journey on Wednesday as the first Airbus C295 military transport aircraft built in the country successfully completed its maiden test flight from the Final Assembly Line (FAL) in Vadodara, Gujarat. The achievement is being seen as a significant step forward for the country’s defence production capabilities and a major boost to the Government of India’s “Make in India” initiative.
The successful flight marks an important stage in the development of the C295 programme. It demonstrates India’s growing ability to manufacture advanced military aircraft within the country. The aircraft that completed the test flight is the first of 40 C295 aircraft that will be produced in India under a partnership between Airbus and Tata Advanced Systems Limited for the Indian Air Force.
Confirming the development, Airbus Defence shared the news through a social media post. The company stated, “The first 'Made in India' Airbus C295 military transport aircraft has conducted its first test flight from the Final Assembly Line in Vadodara, marking a milestone for Indian aviation and defence. This maiden test flight is a crucial step in the aircraft's post-production testing process.”
The maiden flight is a key part of the aircraft’s testing phase before it is delivered for operational use. The successful completion of this stage indicates that the programme is progressing as planned. It also reflects the growing strength of India’s aerospace manufacturing sector, which has been receiving increased attention in recent years.
Airbus Defence further highlighted the significance of the achievement and its role in the larger objective of the programme. The company said, “As the first of 40 aircraft to be built in India, the test flight advances the programme's objective of delivering the first 'Made in India' C295 aircraft this year to the Indian Air Force.”
The C295 programme holds special importance because it is the first time a military aircraft is being manufactured in India by a private sector company. The project represents a major shift in the country’s defence production landscape, where private companies are playing a larger role in supporting national defence requirements. The collaboration between Airbus and Tata Advanced Systems Limited has created a manufacturing ecosystem that includes contributions from several Indian companies.
Speaking about the progress of the programme, Airbus Defence noted, “The programme's progress reflects the steady and dedicated work of Airbus, Tata Advanced Systems Limited and the several Indian MSMEs, which are manufacturing parts for the aircraft across India.”
The involvement of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) from different parts of the country has strengthened domestic manufacturing capabilities and generated opportunities for Indian suppliers. The programme is also expected to help develop technical expertise, create employment opportunities and support the growth of the aerospace sector in India.
The Airbus C295 is widely recognised as a versatile and dependable tactical transport aircraft. It is currently used by military forces across the world and has become an important platform for a variety of defence operations. Its flexibility allows it to perform several roles based on operational requirements.
Manufactured by Airbus Defence and Space, the aircraft is designed to handle a wide range of missions. These include tactical troop and cargo transport, surveillance operations, humanitarian assistance missions and various support tasks. Its ability to operate in different conditions has made it a trusted aircraft for military organisations globally.
The successful test flight also brings attention to the Final Assembly Line facility in Vadodara, which plays a central role in the C295 manufacturing programme in India. The facility was inaugurated in October 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. The inauguration marked the beginning of a new phase in India’s defence manufacturing ambitions and highlighted the importance of international partnerships in strengthening domestic production capabilities.
With the first Indian-built C295 aircraft now completing its maiden flight, the programme has crossed a significant milestone. The achievement underlines India’s efforts to become a stronger manufacturing hub for advanced defence equipment. It also reinforces the objectives of the “Make in India” initiative by demonstrating the country’s capability to produce sophisticated military platforms domestically. As the programme moves ahead, the focus will remain on completing production and delivering the first “Made in India” C295 aircraft to the Indian Air Force later this year.
