Sri Lankan police have arrested two people suspected of planning a terror attack targeting Israeli nationals in the country. The arrests were made after India shared intelligence about a potential threat.
Security was stepped up at the surfing resort of Arugam Bay on the eastern coast after the reports of a potential attack surfaced in the region. The police's Terrorism Investigation Division has taken two people into custody. Authorities in Arugam Bay reported that both arrests were the consequence of Indian intelligence cooperation over the security threat.
It stated that one of the suspects had travelled from Iraq to the nation. According to the police, security was stepped up in the locations two weeks ago after they got information on October 7 about a potential attack. The Indian notice had stated that the strike might occur between October 19 and October 23.
On Wednesday, the US Embassy and the British High Commission in Colombo issued warnings to their citizens, saying they had reliable information about a potential threat in Arugam Bay. They strongly advised tourists to stay away from the area until further notice.
According to the police, the southern coast and the resort regions in the southeast now have a security net in place to deter attacks.
