The Uttar Pradesh government has undertaken an extensive crackdown on illegal encroachments in districts along the India-Nepal border, including Bahraich, Shravasti, Siddharthnagar, Maharajganj, and Balrampur. Hundreds of unauthorised structures, such as unrecognised religious buildings, have been demolished. In Shravasti and Bahraich, illegal constructions were torn down, while in Siddharthnagar, 12 illicit structures were recognised and notices were given. A survey in Lakhimpur Kheri revealed no unlawful encroachments. These actions are part of a broader effort to reclaim valuable border land that has been illegally occupied, which the Yogi Adityanath-led government is determined to recover.
Monica Rani, the district magistrate of Bahraich, confirmed that the demolition drive was carried out on Monday, following instructions from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. In the 0-10 km stretch along the India-Nepal border in Nanpara tehsil, 227 instances of illegal encroachment were found. Among them, two illegal structures were demolished on Monday, bringing the total number of encroachments removed over the last four days to 89, releasing 91 sites. In Mihipurwa tehsil, 157 cases were specified, with four illegal structures demolished on Monday and 12 removed on April 27, releasing 16 government land sites. Additionally, measures were taken against seven unauthorised madrasas.
Shravasti District Magistrate Ajay Kumar Dwivedi stated that 12 unrecognised madrasas were sealed on Monday for not having proper documentation. These madrasas were located in Jamunha (six), Bhinga (four), and Ikouna (two). In total, 32 madrasas have encountered motion so far.
A mosque in Bhartha Roshangarh village, Bhinga tehsil, which was somewhat constructed on government land, was demolished during a drive to identify illegal structures. Maharajganj District Magistrate Anunay Jha reported that authorities discovered religious activities happening in the revenue village of Sonpipri Khurd, leading to the removal of an unlawful structure meant to become a ‘mazar’. The demolition took place with the presence of the village head, revenue officials, and the SSB team. An unlawful madrassa made on pond land in Ramnagar village was also removed. Lakhimpur Kheri District Magistrate Durga Shakti Nagpal stated that the identification of illegal buildings resumed throughout Monday in the Tehsil Palia.
A temporary mosque in Krishnanagar Colony was dismantled, and efforts are underway to evict an illegal Idgah in Chandan Chowki village, which has been in place for 80 years, under Section 67. The District Magistrate of Siddharthnagar reported that 12 illegal structures have been identified, and notices have been sent to the occupants. He added, "If the constructions are not removed, legal action, including demolition, will follow."
