According to the reports by the news agency, The Indian Express, SK Hynix, a South Korean chip manufacturer, is exploring the possibility of establishing a packaging facility in India. The company is actively engaging with relevant government officials and considering India's semiconductor manufacturing incentive scheme for this endeavor.
The report states that SK Hynix, primarily engaged in the manufacturing of memory chips, is assessing India as a potential destination for assembly and testing activities. The company specializes in various memory chip types, including computing memory, consumer and network memory, and graphics memory.
Citing a senior government official aware of the development, the newspaper reported, "SK Hynix has shown interest in our scheme, and is currently evaluating it to assess it from their business's perspective. We believe they are in the final stages of submitting a proposal to set up a packaging plant, similar to that of Micron's."
Micron has recently announced its plans to establish a packaging facility in Gujarat, India, with a substantial investment of $2.75 billion. The company will contribute $825 million from its own funds, while the remaining 70 percent will come from government subsidies provided by the central and state governments.
This move by Micron aligns with the Indian government's efforts to boost semiconductor chip manufacturing in the country, which has attracted significant interest from both local and global private players. The initiative offers subsidies of approximately 50 percent of the total project cost for setting up assembly and testing units.
Samsung and SK Hynix, prominent players in the global sales of dynamic random-access memory (RAM) chips, currently dominate the market with a combined market share of around 70 percent, according to data from research agency TrendForce. Micron, on the other hand, holds approximately 26 percent of the market share in this segment.
The recent developments in the semiconductor manufacturing landscape in India have garnered attention, especially considering the challenges faced by the sector. While there is no official confirmation yet about SK Hynix's plans to establish a manufacturing facility in India, the news is still encouraging.
This development comes at a time when Foxconn has decided to part ways with Vedanta, which is perceived as a potential setback to the country's semiconductor manufacturing ambitions. Despite this, the overall investment towards semiconductor manufacturing in India has reached $10 billion, with the government providing substantial subsidies to support the establishment of assembly and testing units.
Overall, the Indian government's initiatives to promote semiconductor chip manufacturing have enticed both local and global private players, with Micron's significant investment and the market dominance of Samsung and SK Hynix in this sector. While challenges persist, the focus on subsidies and support for assembly and testing units highlights the country's commitment to becoming a key player in the semiconductor industry.
