In a significant step marking the strengthening of bilateral relations, China and the Solomon Islands have embarked on a series of agreements during Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare's visit to Beijing.
This visit comes four years after the Solomon Islands made a pivotal decision to switch its diplomatic ties from Taiwan to China. The recent developments include the signing of a police cooperation deal and the elevation of their partnership to a "comprehensive strategic partnership," underscoring the evolving foreign policy stance of the Solomon Islands.
During the visit, China and the Solomon Islands sealed nine agreements, including a significant police cooperation pact. Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare expressed his appreciation to China for its contributions in tackling global challenges, particularly in the realms of peace and sustainable development. Sogavare also acknowledged the valuable lessons his country can glean from China's experiences. The signing of multiple deals reflects the growing collaboration and exchange of expertise between the two nations.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang lauded the fruitful and rapid progress in the bilateral relationship between China and the Solomon Islands over the past four years.
"In just four years, the relationship between China and the Solomon Islands has developed rapidly, and we can now say that it is very fruitful," Li told Sogavare.
The United States and Australia have been diligently observing China's expanding influence in the region, with particular attention to the Solomon Islands. The decision by Prime Minister Sogavare to review the 2017 security treaty with China has sparked concerns among these nations. Australia has a historical role in providing policing support to the Solomon Islands.
However, China has been actively increasing its police training endeavours in the region. In light of these developments, the United States has urged for transparency and open discussions to address the regional security implications associated with these agreements.
