Sikkim is facing a severe crisis as relentless flash floods have caused major damage. These floods have not only damaged vehicles and properties but have also led to a grave situation. In the aftermath of these floods in parts of Sikkim, a troubling development has emerged- 23 Indian Army personnel are missing, and their whereabouts are still unknown.
This alarming and deeply concerning revelation has been officially confirmed by the Defence Public Relations Officer (PRO) in Guwahati. The whereabouts of these missing army personnel remain untraceable at the moment, compounding the gravity of the situation.
People are working hard to understand just how bad these floods are and to find the missing soldiers. The situation is changing, and they're doing their best to keep us updated and make sure everyone is safe.
The state administration took swift action on Wednesday as they issued an alert in the north and east districts in response to a sudden surge in the water levels of the river. Residents residing in the catchment areas of the Teesta River were promptly evacuated to ensure their safety. Meanwhile, the overflowing Teesta River inflicted damage by washing away a portion of Malli Road and National Highway 10.
“Some army establishments along the valley have been affected and efforts are on to confirm details,” Defence Public Relations Officer spokesperson, Guwahati, said in a statement.
The army vehicles were parked at Bardang near Singtam when the flash flood occurred, precipitated by the release of water from the Chungthang dam.
An alert message by the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority stated, "Flooding of Teesta River Basin has occurred due to Cloud Burst in the Northern Part of Mangan District. All are advised to stay alert and avoid travel along the River Basin."
Additionally, all police stations in the low-lying areas have been placed on high alert and instructed to evacuate residents to ensure their safety. Further, those residing along the banks of the Teesta River have also received advisories to evacuate their homes, prioritizing their well-being.
The India Meteorological Department said on X, "As regards weather forecast over Sikkim, light to moderate rainfall is expected during next 3-4 days over Sikkim."
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang assessed the situation following a cloud burst in Singtam, as a flood-like scenario unfolded.
The Singhtam Foot Bridge, spanning the River Teesta, collapsed due to the surging river, resulting in significant damage. Currently, ongoing efforts are dedicated to gauging the complete scope of destruction brought about by this natural disaster. Also, substantial portions of National Highway (NH) 10, which links West Bengal to Sikkim, have been washed away, and numerous roads are now impassable.
